Holiday Mini-Retreats

Spiritual director Dorothy Whiston, D.Min., will offer two mini-retreats in preparation for the holiday season at First Christian Church, 900 Lincolnshire Pl., Coralville.  'Gratitude and Forgiveness: The Two Sides of God's 'Ledger'' will explore the 'economy' of a fully human life and spiritual practices to help sustain a grateful and forgiving heart.  It will be held Sat., Nov. 21, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.  'Saying Yes to God' will help people enter into the Advent season, and the incarnation of God in the person of Jesus, by reflecting on what it means to say 'yes' to God with our whole lives, as well as a simple Rule of Life to support doing that day-to-day.  This program will be on Sat., Dec. 5, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.  Both events are funded through a Lilly Foundation Sabbatical Grant and are open to the public free of charge.  Pre-registration is required -- by Nov. 16 for the Nov. 21 program and by Nov. 30 for the Dec. 5 retreat.  Call 337-4181 or email disciple@xwires.net for more information or to register.

The Catherine McAuley Center (CMC) will provide citizenship exam preparation classes at no cost every Saturday from October 17 to November 21, 2009.  Classes will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at CMC located at 866 Fourth Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids. 

            Materials will be available to prepare for the revised American Citizenship and Government test   The class will include practice for the application interview, practice for the written portion of the exam as well as the American History and Government portion.  The class will use study books, audio CDs and DVDs to as preparation tools. 

CMC provides one-on-one tutoring for students who would like to improve and expand their English skills in preparation for the citizenship interview or everyday communication.  Please contact Ann McNee at CMC at 319-363-4993 to register or with any questions about the Center and its programs.

wall-mounted face, a tumbler with an owl wearing an etched crown, a tiny vase featuring a nude female figure with long, tangled tresses of hair, and a totem-like candlestick holder in the shape of a ceramic goat--the most diverse show of pottery forms that AKAR exhibits each year is even more varied and interesting for 2009.

AKAR, a downtown Iowa City art and design gallery with a national reputation for its ceramics shows, will present 30 “brand new” artists for their annual holiday invitational beginning November 13. None of the artists--who give the show its name by sending five works apiece--have been specially featured before in the gallery, though many have been around clay and pottery for years.

“We are looking for new talent all the time via magazines, show invitations, show cards, and studio open houses,” said Sanjay Jani, who owns and runs AKAR with his wife, Jigna. “The best thing that has happened to us is that our reputation has grown over the years and artists have learned our passions and interests.”

The couple's passions and interests cover a lot of territory. A love for ceramic work from potters near and far began a tradition of monthly shows in 1999. AKAR continues to order select international design products into its downtown gallery from around the world. The Janis also recently renovated a building in a new location in Iowa City to house their residential architecture and design firm. Pottery shows in the past have focused on forms and shapes influenced by buildings and construction.

“I find that we are always bias for forms exploring the vessel,” Sanjay said. “A successful pot unites form, function, mass, space, decoration, firing, and craftsmanship as a singular experience.”

Iowa Artisans Gallery opens its annual Handmade for the Holidays exhibit November 13- December 31. Ornaments in blown glass, ceramic, wood and paper take center stage during this time. Also featured are a wide variety of handpainted silk scarves and neckties, higher end and fashion jewelry and “message boxes” by Mikutowski woodworking. Handmade toys include hand puppets using felted recycled sweaters, and wooden pull toys. The Gallery’s 200 artists from across the country supply unusual handmade pieces in various media: ceramics, glass, wood, metal, fiber, as well paintings, original prints and holiday cards.  Many artists work with recycled materials.  The Gallery was named by readers of the Iowa City Press Citizen as both the area’s Best Place to Buy Gifts and the Best Art Gallery in 2009, and is currently celebrating its 25^th Anniversary.

Iowa Artisans Gallery will participate in a December 5 downtown holiday open house, “There’s no place like HERE for the holidays,” 10am – 5pm at 21 locations.

 

Iowa Artisans Gallery was established by artists in 1984 and is celebrating its 25^th Anniversary. We feature work by American artists, a rarity in retail these days. We are focused on Midwestern artists wherever possible. Dawn’s Hide & Bead Away will offer a glass making flamework class on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 10am to 2pm with instructor Wendy Ford.  Participants must have completed Flame I or the equivalent to take this workshop.
 
This workshop will continue to explore the art of lampworking with a torch and glass rods.  In this class, you will learn more techniques for manipulating color, making the perfect dot, and shaping with a goal of making a variety of more complicated beads.
 
Participants must be at least 15 years old to sign up for this class.

Children will look for architectural details in these paintings and will then create a 3-dimensional paper bag building.

Scrapbook Workshop (family-friendly event) - Kids will view scrapbooks from the Linge Library’s collection at the History Center. Each child will create a scrapbook page to take home. Scrapbook pages can be enhanced by if children will bring along 2-dimensional pieces to include on their page, such as movie stubs, or cards, or photographs.

Shadow Box Workshop (family-friendly event) - Kids will search Richard Pinney’s murals for clues about the people and businesses represented in his work displayed at the History Center. Pinney, a local artist and writer, was also a newspaper editor, cartoonist, and public relations director. His work is found in museums, publications, posters, and calendars. His wooden box sculptures, designed to tell a story, are found in homes, businesses, museums, and art galleries throughout the United States. Each child will create a shadow box that tells the story of his or her family.

Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, in collaboration with the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, and the Cedar Rapids Community School District will produce the children’s opera, Brundibar, sponsored by the Joan & David Thaler Holocaust Remembrance Fund, Ronald & Sue Reider, & Bradley & Riley, P.C.  The 35 children in the production range in age from 8 – 14 and represent 10 schools in the Cedar Rapids Community School District.  Sets have been designed, painted & constructed by an Eastern Iowa Arts Academy class at Wilson Middle School.

The Luther College theatre/dance department will present six performances of “The Good Person of Setzuan,” a blend of song, dance and theatre, Nov. 13-21.
    Opening night is Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m.  The show continues with evening performances Saturday, Nov. 14 and Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.; matinee performances Saturday, Nov. 14 and 21 at 1:30 p.m.; and a special evening performance Friday, Nov. 20 at 10 p.m.
    All performances will be in Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the campus of Luther College (http://www.luther.edu).
    Jeff Dintaman, Luther professor of theatre, and Jane Hawley, Luther associate professor of dance, are co-directing the performance, based on Bertolt Brecht’s morality play.
    Inspired by ancient Chinese folk tales, “The Good Person of Setzuan” follows three gods who descend into the city of Setzuan to reward a kind prostitute, the one virtuous person in the community.  The story shows how she copes with her new good fortune and those who want to take it from her.

Students in Luther College’s opera workshop course will present ‘Americani in Italia’ on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the campus of Luther College (http://www.luther.edu).
   
The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

“Americani in Italia” will feature a program of all-Italian opera scenes by Monteverdi, Mozart, Rossini and Verdi.

The opera workshop class includes seniors Maggie Boland, Ryan Deignan, Brett Epperson, Rachel Grippen, Andy Kust, Emily Moore, Charles Zachary Owen, Jill Phillips, Dave Schmitt, Heidi Smorstad and Jenny Ward; juniors Brittney McClary, Michael Penick, Aliyah Richling, Anthony Rohr and Rebecca Vernon; and sophomores Carah Claflin, Teresa Procter, Nick Sanches and Chad Sonka. 

The student accompanists for the program are Luther seniors Sarah May, Greg Schultz and Paige Silberhorn.

Karen Kanakis, Luther assistant professor of music, will direct the performance. 

Kanakis has received numerous awards and recognitions, both as a teacher and performer.  In 2008, she was named one of six young leaders across the country by the National Association of Singers of Teaching.

She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2008 as part of a program of performing duos from the Luther music faculty.

Soaring poetry.  Ferocious, filthy combat.  Heroic patriotism.  Degradation and humiliation in the “fog of war.”  Nationalistic slogan-making.  Ugly face-to-face throat-cutting.  William Shakespeare stirs all of this and more into his most popular “history” play (and his most compelling “war” play.)  Henry V achieves the nearly impossible, as both a “call-to-patriotism-because-war-is-necessary” play, and an anti-war-play.  Streamlined to 90 minutes and utilizing “promenade-style” staging in which audience and actors inhabit the same staging environment (together,) join the Theatre Simpson company on an invigorating exploration of power, gender, viciousness and forgiveness that is as timely right now as it was 400 years ago.

Your “promenade” experience begins as you enter Pote Theatre stage, passing through swinging steel gates.  Before you and around you is an “open-air” military encampment, peopled by English soldiers going about their daily business.  Card-games, bonfires, musicians and weapons-makers surround you as you step into the production’s theatrical world.  There is no stage, there are no seats. The audience stands amidst the actors and musicians. You're in a desolate near-future now and the play unfolds all around you instead of in front of you.  Suddenly, next to you, or behind you, voices debate the merits and necessities of invading France—starting with the debunking of the sexist and arcane “Salique Laws” which hold that women or their heirs are illegitimate Sovereigns.  The battle is quickly joined, as the maturing Hary (this production’s “King Henry”) and her sister-warriors lay siege to the men and boys of France.  And from your new vantage point, dodging the battle in the midst of the story, you are a part of the action for the next 90 minutes. This will be your promenade theatre experience.

Given that you will be in the midst of the action and moving around the space, we strongly encourage you to wear comfortable shoes, and to leave purses, backpacks, and bags at home or safely stowed in your car.  Limited coat-check service will be available.

The Grinnell College Department of Theatre and Dance will present Shakespeare’s 1600 romantic comedy “As You Like It” on Nov. 20-22 in Roberts Theatre in the Bucksbaum Center for the Arts on the Grinnell College campus.

            Long recognized as the greatest English pastoral play, “As You Like It” sends a group of noble refugees from the pomp of court life out to the pastures and forest of Arden, where the banished Duke and his court make “sweet use of adversity” and the heroine Rosalind, disguised as a shepherd boy, tries and tests her lover Orlando. The play both celebrates and mocks “the simple life” and the follies of romantic love. Court and country, sophisticated and simple, sonneteering swains and goatgirls—Shakespeare builds the play by contrasts and ends it in harmony, as fortunes are restored, the lost are found, and four pairs of lovers are married. “As You Like It” is a holiday, filled with wit, song, dance, pageantry, and the redeeming wisdom of the “good in everything.” Grinnell’s production is set in Regency England and draws on 19th-century Arcadian landscape design and art.

Ellen Mease, associate professor of theatre, directs the play. Guest artist Stewart Benjamin Farrar designs set, lights, and props, and resident designer Erin Howell-Gritsch provides the Regency costumes.

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. for the Nov. 20-21 performances and 2 p.m. for the performance on Nov. 22.  Tickets are required for this free event and may be obtained at the Bucksbaum Center for the Arts ticket office beginning Mon., Nov. 16.     Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre continues its 35th Birthday Season with a guest puppet theatre from Florida.  Puppets To Go, with seasoned puppeteer Bob Nathanson, will present a favorite Grimms fairy tale on Sunday, November 22, at 2:00 and 4:00 P.M. at the New Strand Theatre, 111 E. Third, West Liberty.
   In this enchanting, updated version of The Frog Prince, Wanda the Witch casts a spell on the handsome prince, turning him into a frog. To break the spell, he now must be kissed by a beautiful princess. There are a few delightful surprises, too. Beautifully designed hand puppets and music, which will evoke a wide range of moods, enhance this production.
    Bob Nathanson is well known among American puppeteers for his witty, wacky scripts and his good humored manner.  Bob writes the humor column for The Puppetry Journal, a national magazine produced by Puppeteers of America, and is the recipient of the George Latshaw Award for writing about the art of puppetry.  Bob’s book, Diary of a Doll Wiggler, a hilarious and sometimes touching memoir, will be available for sale.
    West Liberty will be active and lively on November 22, as it celebrates its Holiday Open House.  Be sure to allow extra time that afternoon to enjoy impromptu performances, open businesses, and holiday treats.  The Holiday Open House is scheduled from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.  As part of the Open House, Owl Glass Puppetry Center will offer a craft activity free of charge.  You can also do some of your holiday shopping at the puppetry center, choosing hand-printed posters, T-shirts, puppets, or a beautifully produced children’s book, Marcel and the Dirtball, written by Anne Leo Ellis and illustrated by Eulenspiegel’s Monica Leo.    

   Additional performances will take place on Monday, November 23 at 10:00 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. Tickets for both days are $$5.00.  A special group price of $$3.50 per ticket is available on Monday for groups of ten or more who purchase their tickets in advance.

The Englert will be alive with The Sound of Music this Sunday, November 22nd, as the historic theater brings the classic back to the big screen. The Luther College Jazz Orchestra will present a fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 4 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Luther College Center for Faith and Life (http://www.luther.edu).
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The Jazz Orchestra will highlight works by Hoagy Carmichael, Chick Corea, Gordon Goodwin, Jeff Jarvis, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, and Chuck Savre.  They will also perform a piece with words and music by Al Hoffman, Walter Kent, and Manny Kurtz, arranged by John Clayton.

The Jazz Orchestra performs under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, Luther associate professor of music and education.

Guzmán holds the bachelor’s degree from Luther.  He holds the doctoral degree, the master’s degree and an associate degree from Florida State University as well as a degree in Electromechanical Engineering from the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic.  He frequently serves as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator.

Luther College is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world with seven choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and nearly 1,000 student musicians. Luther students perform in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 350 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, church music and performance.

The Linn County Conservation Department is hosting a Drum Making Workshop on November 20 and 22 from 6:00pm to 10pm at Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center near Toddville.  Drums have been a significant part of people’s lives for thousands of years. The drum represents the life force of creation. By tradition, American Indian drums are large, two to three feet in diameter, and are commonly played by groups of men who sit around them in a circle. Some cultures also use a smaller hand drum for either musical or decorative purposes. We will be making a hand drum during the two afternoons this weekend. Cost for each drum is $$75 per person. Prepayment and registration are due by October 10. Space is limited and there must be a minimum number of participants for this workshop. Please call 892-6485 to register.

Homemade jar recipes with pretty layers of ingredients are a thoughtful and budget-friendly way to treat friends, neighbors or teachers to the flavors of the season. Making them is easy and fun – especially if kids are involved. Our class activity will include mixing up and baking oatmeal cookies, sampling hot cocoa and Confetti Soup and making a homemade gift in a jar.  Kids will take home a homemade gift of Oatmeal Cookies in a Jar, all decorated and ready to give! Monday, November 23, 2009 - Mount Mercy's Art Department: Donna Stack

The Mount Mercy College art department will exhibit the work of artist Donna Stack November 10 – December 11 at the Janalyn Hanson White Gallery on the Mount Mercy College campus. An artist reception will be held November 10 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Stacks’ work has been exhibited in numerous galleries throughout the country, including Rush Arts in Miami, Fla., Punch Gallery in Seattle, Wash., and Gallery Korea in New York City. In 2007, her piece Storytellers was shown in the Primo Piano Livingallery in Leece, Italy. Her work has also been featured in a number of magazines including US, Artweek, and Mavin.

 Stack currently serves as an art technical assistant at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Prior to that, she worked at many different universities across the country as an instructor, an adjunct professor, and as an assistant professor. She has taught a variety of courses including Sculpture, Art Appreciation and Fabrications.

Stack earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., and went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art with an emphasis in sculpture/installation/video from the University of South Florida.

The Janalyn Hanson White Gallery is located in lower McAuley Hall on the Mount Mercy College campus. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. or by appointment. Viewings outside of normal business hours can be arranged by checking out a gallery key from the McAuley Switchboard, or by contacting the Lundy Desk at 319-363-8213.

Linn County will hold its annual public budget forum Monday, November 23 at 5:00 p.m. in the Linn County West board room, 2500 Edgewood SW in Cedar Rapids. The forum is an opportunity for citizens to speak to the Board of Supervisors about ideas for Linn County’s fiscal year 2011 budget.

Linn County’s Budget Director, Dawn Jindrich, will provide an overview of where the County is in the budgeting process for FY11 and then the forum will be open for public comment.

Music provided by a combined choir from the People's Universalist Unitarian Church and Unity Center of Cedar Rapids under the direction of Nina Swanson.  Also appearing will be the Mt. Mercy College Bell Ringers.

Please bring non-perishable food items or canned goods for the Linn Community Food Bank.  The monetary offering will benefit the food bank as well.

A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

The Heritage Area Agency on Aging is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning October 27 through November 29from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Sessions will be held at the Solon United Methodist Church, 122 N West Street. Program cost is $$5.00.  A workbook is provided and refreshments are served. Space is limited to 15 participants.

The Golden K Kiwanis Club was chartered in Cedar Rapids on May 22, 1990, under the basic principles of Kiwanis International for the purpose of working together to serve our community.

The Cedar Rapids group is comprised of men and women over age 55.

Meetings are held every Tuesday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Third Avenue and Fifth Street, SE, and consist of a program on a current topic plus a short business report. Free parking is generally available in the lot behind the church.

The Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host two open houses on November 24
at the African American Museum of Iowa and the Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel. The Corridor MPO is holding these sessions to gather community input on the recommended transit route changes for Cedar Rapids Transit services operating in the metro area. These options were prepared based on technical feasibility and public input received from the previous two open houses.
