The Williamsburg High School Choirs and Community Singers will present “Christmas in Williamsburg”, a Grand Concert on December 6^th at the W.H.S. Gymnasium. There will be two performances starting at 3:00, and 5:30 p.m.

The High School Choirs and Community Singers will combine to perform, “A Festival of Lessons and Carols”, with orchestra. This work, rich in holiday splendor, is a stirring presentation of the Christmas story in readings and carols. The combined choirs will feature over 200 singers with a 35 piece orchestra.

Visit a beautifully restored Illinois Central Railroad passenger depot located in Independence, Iowa.  75 small trees are decorated for the holidays along with approximately 10 specialty items.  This is also a 4week silent auction fundraiser for Buchanan County Tourism Bureau.  Buchanan County Tourism is an all-volunteer organization supporting and promoting the varied cultural, scenic, and historical opportunities in the county.  No admission, but a food item donation for the local Food Pantry is asked.    Saturdays and Sundays Nov 7th through Sunday, December 6th.

UI Symphony and Choirs perform Mendelssohn's 'Hymn of Praise' Dec. 2

The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra and Choirs, conducted by Timothy Stalter, will celebrate the 200th birthday of Felix Mendelssohn's birth with a free performance of his Symphony No. 2, Op. 52 -- 'Lobgesang' (Hymn of Praise) -- at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

            Join “News Talk” for a discussion led by Marilyn Drury, Director of ITS Educational Technology at UNI,  of possible elements and issues related to the decline of women IT professionals and to share ideas on methods of attracting and retaining women in information technology.

Riverside Theatre will hold area auditions for the professional company of the 2010 Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Festival on Saturday, December 12, 2009, beginning at noon. Auditions will be held at the theatre, 213 N. Gilbert Street in Iowa City. To schedule an audition appointment, call the Riverside Theatre box office at (319) 338-7672.

 

Riverside Theatre will employ a full time, professional company, both Equity and non-Equity actors. All professional actors will be cast in both festival shows and will also understudy. Full-time rehearsals begin May 11. The productions play in repertory through July 11, a nine-week contract. Audition requirements: photo/resume and two contrasting monologues (one classical and one contemporary), 3 minutes maximum.

 

2010 will mark the 11^th year of the Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Festival. For the full regional audition schedule, please visit www.riversidetheatre.org. Auditions for the RTSF Intern Company will be held January 30.

Linn County will hold its annual public budget forum Monday, November 23 at 5:00 p.m. in the Linn County West board room, 2500 Edgewood SW in Cedar Rapids. The forum is an opportunity for citizens to speak to the Board of Supervisors about ideas for Linn County’s fiscal year 2011 budget.

Linn County’s Budget Director, Dawn Jindrich, will provide an overview of where the County is in the budgeting process for FY11 and then the forum will be open for public comment.

The Johnson County Festival of Trees!

The Festival will be open to the public from November 27 – December 6, 2009 as the halls of the Marriott will be decked with dozens of artistically decorated trees and wreaths donated from local business, organizations and individuals.

The Opening Gala and Winter Ball, on Saturday, November 28, will feature music from the Rod Peirson's Big Band featuring Craig Boche and featuring performances from the Nolte Academy of Dance and the National Dance Academy.   The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with dancing continuing until 10:00 pm.

In addition to dancing the night away, guests will be feasting on appetizers and desserts from the Coralville Marriott Hotel, Vespa’s , Onami, Shorts Burger & Shine, Red Avocado, Mama’s Deli, Fair Grounds Coffee, and Tip Top Cakes.

Auctioneer Stan Crooks from Auction America will be on hand to auction off the trees and wreaths.   All proceeds will benefit the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, a 500-seat community performance space, now under construction in Downtown Coralville.   Also available will be a special auction of ornaments benefiting the Summer of the Arts and a Grab Bag sale benefiting City Circle Acting Company of Coralville.

Hunger Relief Banquet and food drive hosted by the Benton Community FCCLA chapter. The purpose is to spread awareness of global hunger. It will take place on Wednesday, December 16th at 6:30pm in the Benton Community High School Auditorium. The cost is seven dollars, or five dollars with any number of non-perishable food items. Money will be collected at the door. All proceeds will benefit a local charity. A delicious meal will be provided. Driving directions are available by email. The Iowa City Dog Obedience Club will host its annual dog agility trials Dec. 4 to 6 at the Iowa Equestrian Center at  Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids. Judging begins at noon Dec. 4 and at 8 a.m. Dec. 5 and 6 and continues throughout the day. Visitors can watch as handlers direct their dogs through  timed obstacle courses of jumps, tunnels, weave poles, teeter-totters and more. A variety of breeds handled by trainers from across the Midwest will compete. The event is held in a semi-heated  arena.

Plans are in the works for a new playground in the shape of a Pirate Ship to be built on Alburnett Road (south of Alburnett, north of Marion).  This new playground will be 'accessible' for all children.  A Benefit Skate Party has been planned to help support fundraising efforts for this new playground.  The party is held at Super Skate from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and is open to all area families.  Cost is $$6.50 per person which includes the cost of skate rental.  There will be fun family skate games and plenty of door prizes.  You wont want to miss this fun.  All proceeds benefit the Pirate Ship Playground Project.

Our annual cookie, craft and good stuff sale is upon us!  The 23rd annual Cookie Walk and Mini-Bazaar will be Saturday, December 12, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.   

This year as a very special offer, the FPC Cookbooks will sell for FIVE COOKBOOKS for $$25, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. only.  You must buy five Cookbooks to get this fantastic offer.  After the special, the Cookbooks will revert to the regular price of $$15 per Cookbook and will be for sale Sundays until Christmas.  All proceeds from the special Dec 12 Cookbook sale will go to local flood relief.

Here is how it works:  Cookies are displayed on tables and guests are given boxes in which to put their selection.  Plastic gloves are provided.  Cookies are $$4 a dozen.

Mini-Bazaar:  Items to contribute include Christmas and other crafts, needlework, plants, jams, jellies, novelties, decorations.  Nearly new games and full puzzles are popular items.

Proceeds from the cookie and mini-bazaar sales will be used for local, national and international mission projects.  Sponsored by Presbyterian Women, this event has raised more than $$2,000 each year in previous years.

Fellowship Community Church (225 North Avenue, Norwalk) will host the annual Norwalk Christmas Festival on December 4^th-6^th, 2009. The centerpiece of the festival is a musical drama titled, Immanuel, and is written and performed by members of FCC. Immanuel is the original Christmas story, with a twist, as told by the innkeeper in Bethlehem. In addition to the drama, performance groups from around the Norwalk community will present music and dance pieces at various times during the festival. Groups include Martensdale-St. Mary’s High School Choir, Lakewood Elementary Honor Choir, Norwalk Middle School Choir, Norwalk High School Choir, Stepping Stones Preschool and Dance-a-Cross Dance Studio. Performances will be on Friday, December 4^th at 7pm, Saturday, December 5^th at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday, December 6^th at 10:30am. With the street lights turned down and the downtown rooftops outlined in the white lights – over 50 lighted floats will make their way down the Main Street District – creating a magical Christmas experience for young and old.  A diamond ring, a wind turbine, Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, and a giant snow globe with falling snow are just a few of the lighted floats sponsored by local businesses and industry.

Registration is now open for the University of Iowa Recreational Services' annual 'Hawkeye Shootout' youth basketball tournament, to be held Friday Dec. 11 to Sunday, Dec. 13 at the UI Field House.

Spots are still available for registration. Cost per team is $$200 and teams will be scheduled for a minimum of three games. The tournament is free and open to spectators.

The Hawkeye Shootout is offered to seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls across Iowa. All participants must return both the completed registration form and the entry fee to be entered into the tournament.

'Yellow City,' directed by Master of Fine Arts candidate Anthony Nelson ('The Book of Liz'), follows a group of 20-somethings as they literally navigate their way through a wasteland caused by a massive pandemic.  Left for dead and barricaded behind highly secured walls, they must travel to the other side of the imprisoned city to find the infamous 'Yellow Man,' who holds the secret to survival.

FREE CHRISTMAS DAY DINNER OFFERED AT TWO CHURCHES

For the 24^th consecutive year, St. Mark’s and St. Paul’s United Methodist Churches will serve free dinners for anyone in the Cedar Rapids metro area on Christmas day, Friday, December 25.  Serving will be continuous at both … St. Paul’s on 3^rd Avenue Southeast and St. Mark’s at Johnson Avenue & Jacolyn Drive Northwest.

Dinner will be served from 1 until 3pm, with a menu including turkey and all the trimmings – all prepared by church volunteers.  Arrangements can be made for volunteers to pick up those unable to drive to the churches, or to have meals delivered to anyone unable to leave their home.  United Way 2-1-1 is handling reservations, pick-ups and meal deliveries.  Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, call 2-1-1 … cellphone users call 739-4211.  Informal deadline for reservations, deliveries and pick-ups is noon Monday, December 21, but no one will be turned away if they come to the churches.

The meals are offered for anyone in need of either food or companionship – or both – on the holiday.

Volunteers, including kitchen help, are welcome.  To sign up, call United Way 2-1-1 or either church.

Luther College faculty members, students and community members will perform in two Vespers services at First Lutheran Church in Decorah on Dec. 9 and 16 featuring the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Both services begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the public.  Vespers is the evening prayer service in the Lutheran liturgies of the canonical hours.

The Wednesday, Dec. 9 Vespers service will feature the Chancel Choir of First Lutheran Church directed by Spencer Martin, Luther associate professor of music.

Luther faculty who will perform at the Dec. 9 service, include Martin, viola, William Kuhlman, organ, Gregory Peterson, organ, Karen Kanakis, soprano, Jacob Lasseter, baritone, Richard Tirk, trumpet, Jubal Fulks, violin, Eric Kutz, cello, Andrea Beckendorf, bass, Gabriel Shuford, organ and harpsichord, and Luther student Brooks Berg, violin.

Selections will include works for organ, arias from the Bach cantatas and movements from Bach’s instrumental works.

The Wednesday, Dec. 16 Vespers service also features the Chancel Choir of First Lutheran Church in a performance of the Bach Cantata “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme,” BWV 140, as well as other works by Bach for organ and strings.

Spend a night at the movies for a good cause and remember Ushers Ferry the way it used to be! In 2004, the historic village served as one of the primary locations for Love and Valor, an independent film based on the intimate Civil War letters of Jacob and Emmeline Ritner. Ritner, a Union Captain from Iowa, was a teacher, a farmer and an abolitionist before the war. The movie tells of the patriotism, loneliness, slavery, anguish at the death of loved ones and their devotion to each other. As Emmeline is faced with the daunting task of raising four small children, managing the family farm and dealing with other women in town, Jacob participates in great adventure, witnesses the death of family and friends and sees new lands and changing views of the South.

Many local Cedar Rapids places and faces are featured in the film, including participants from the Henry Davison Youth Center. As both of these organizations were severely damaged in the 2008 flood, film producer Charles Larimer has chosen to premiere the film in Cedar Rapids with proceeds going to support flood recovery efforts at both Ushers Ferry and the H.D. Youth Center.

Both Ushers Ferry and the H.D. Youth Center would like to thank Bruce Taylor and the Collins Road Movie Theaters for hosting this premiere and fundraiser.

Dawn’s Hide & Bead Away will offer a glass making flamework class on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 10am to 2pm with instructor Wendy Ford.  Participants must have completed Flame I or the equivalent to take this workshop.
 
This workshop will continue to explore the art of lampworking with a torch and glass rods.  In this class, you will learn more techniques for manipulating color, making the perfect dot, and shaping with a goal of making a variety of more complicated beads.
 
Participants must be at least 15 years old to sign up for this class.

Class fee is $$80 and includes instruction and all needed materials.  There is a limit of 6 seats in this class. Call (319) 338-1566 for more information or to make your reservation.

Stop by the Coralville Recreation Center on Saturday, Dec. 5.  Shop your favorite vendors offering, books, cosmetics, pampering products and much more in the big gym.  Craft vendors will occupy the small gym.  Kirkwood PTO will serve food/desserts in the lounge.

Playtime Poppy announces the Kennedy High School Production of 'A Year with Frog and Toad'.  The well-loved Arnold Lobel's story complete with singing and dancing.  Two great friends; the cheerful and  popular frog and the rather grumpy Toad travel through four fun-filled seasons together.  A clever story of friendship and celebrating in the differences that make each of us special.  Cost of tickets is $$3.00 each and  are required for all patrons 1 year of age and older.  Tickets go on sale 45 minutes prior to each show.
